Cut Costs Not Safety

In times of financial difficulty and recession most businesses are actively looking for ways to cut costs and save money.

PAT TestingThis cautiousness is a wise approach as an uncertain financial economy means uncertainty in business and the future. However, it is important that this cautiousness does not migrate to risk.

Cutting certain aspects of business is a good idea to save money, waste and improve productivity, however this should not include essential safety procedures and checks as these could mean the difference between saving lives and assets, and losing everything.

Often in times of problems safety can be one of the first cuts or is put off as expensive, but with almost all businesses using electricity, safety checks are essential.

Periodic Inspection and TestingAs electricity is something that is a part of everyday life, it can be difficult to remember how much of a dangerous medium it actually is and should never be underestimated.

Ensure that when you are making cutbacks, your safety checks are not one of them. Always comply with regulation and don’t take risks with safety.

How Important is Emergency Lighting Checks?

Emergency lighting is essential as a part of your buildings fire prevention precautions. It is important that it’s able to perform correctly at appropriate times, such as in the event of a fire.

Emergency lighting maintenance is sometimes taken for granted and is often overlooked as business and building owners believe that just having emergency lighting installed is enough to ensure safety.

Emergency Lighting TestingBut if your emergency lighting has not been maintained and checked appropriately, it may let you down just when you need to rely on it most. Emergency lighting is no use if it is not in good working order.

If your building does not have good working emergency lighting, it could mean that in an emergency situation it may be impossible to find the exit leaving your workers stranded in a dangerous building.

All emergency lighting must be maintained to ensure the safety of everyone using your building premises.

Why Do I Need Periodic Installation Testing?

Similar to portable appliance testing, a fixed wire installation test or periodic inspection is the testing of your mains wired electrics to ensure they are safe for use.

Fixed wire electrics are in every room of almost every building in the country, from residential kitchens, bedrooms and dining rooms to commercial offices, warehouses and garages.

Fixed Wire Installation Just like portable appliance equipment, all fixed wiring has the potential to develop faults.

The Periodic Inspection test was brought about after the electricity at work regulations 1989 came into effect. These regulations specify that that all electrical installations should be designed, installed, constructed and maintained safely.

It is important to ensure that your fixed wire installation has been checked and is safe for use by all.

Faults in electrical systems can develop and these faults can cause issues with safety which could cause electric shock or fire.

Fixed Wire TestingIt is vital that your building premises are safe for use and don’t have any hidden problems that could potentially cause fatal damage to the building and those using it.

Also, if you are a landlord it is important that your periodic inspection has been completed to ensure that your tenants are safe in your property.

PAT Testing FAQs

Are you thinking of portable appliance testing for your business but are unsure of what it is and why you need it? Our short guide should answer some of your questions.

What is a Portable Appliance?
A portable appliance refers to any item that can be physically moved and requires a connection via a plug and socket or a fused spur through a cable to the mains electricity supply.

How often do I need to have items tested?
Most people have their appliances tested annually, however there may be some items that could need testing more frequently, or less frequently, than this depending on whether they are higher or lower risk items. This depends on the site and usage of items.

Can anyone test items?
No, the person in charge of completing the PAT testing must be a competent person. This means that they must be competent in PAT testing procedure, which usually means that they hold a qualification. All our PAT technicians are fully qualified and experienced.

Can it be completed outside of working hours?PASSfm PAT Testing
We are able to work around you and can arrange to complete all your testing requirements at a convenient time for you and your business. Our advisers can help you with the details of timings and availability.

Do the items need to be unplugged?
To be able to thoroughly test and inspect electrical items, they must be unplugged form the mains supply.

How long does it take?
This depends on how many items require testing. The advisors will be able to give you a full quotation.

What about records?
It is important to keep records of all portable appliance testing carried out on your premises. This means that you will then be able to prove that you are legally complying with the requirement to maintain equipment. The “HSE Memorandum of Guidance on the Electricity at Work Act Regulations 1989” states that records should be kept for the life of the appliance.

What does it cost?
This depends on the type of equipment and the number of items needing to be tested. Prices will be included in your quote.

Fire Extinguisher ServicingThis scenario, although dramatic, is a very real possibility if you overlook or forget your fire extinguisher servicing.

Just having a fire extinguisher in your office is not enough, you need to have it serviced regularly to ensure that it’s in good working order.

Hopefully this is a situation that will never happen in your work environment but given the danger and damage fire can cause, it is always better to be cautious in a situation like this one.

As far as legality goes, the British Standard Code of Practice BS5306 Part 3 recommends that fire extinguishers are serviced annually to keep them in good working order.

A simple annual service could potentially save you from a disastrous situation and don’t forget, we can complete all your servicing requirements at the same time we complete your fire extinguishing service.

Newbury Racehorse Deaths, What went wrong?

The shocking and tragic death of two racehorses at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday is still under investigation and until this is concluded, it will be impossible to unequivocally determine without doubt, what actually caused the deaths.

However, it is possible to come to some conclusions as to why the horses were so much more affected than the people surrounding them.

The electrical problem stemmed from an underground electrical cable that appears to have had faulty or damaged insulation.

This fault allowed electricity to leak into the ground and raise the voltage of the ground around the fault, the subsequent electrocution became inevitable.

The highest voltage would be nearest to the fault and would continually decrease further away from the fault itself.

As it is not voltage that is the cause of electrocution but current and it’s the difference in voltage that causes the current to flow, a voltage difference between two locations close to the fault would be small, but a difference between two locations, one close to the fault and one a metre and a half away would be much larger.

Horses’ bodies are designed with their front and back legs at quite a considerable distance apart from each other, with all their vital internal organs including the heart between them, whereas peoples’ legs are close together and far away from the heart and internal organs.

This means that the greater distance between the legs of the horses would have meant a larger voltage difference which in turn allows for a larger flow of current.

However, this tragedy should have been prevented through a circuit breaker which should have tripped. The failure of this to happen could mean that there is potentially a circuit breaker fault.

What the death of these two race animals does highlight is the importance of ensuring electrical safety by carrying out regular Portable Appliance Testing, Fixed Wire Testing and any other electrical safety tests that should be regularly undertaken as part general safety requirements.

Safety Initiative for All?

The electrical industry has launched an ambitious safety initiative that involves the Energy Networks Association, the Association of Electricity Producers, HSE and trade unions.

They plan to lead the UKs health and safety to become a world leading expert by 2015.

Stating that senior staff and managers should take responsibility for health and safety and that risk management is important especially in the electrical industry where workers face significant daily risks, this campaign aims to improve safety standards across the whole of the UK.

They have launched their campaign in stages with the first stage being to get managers to commit to the campaign before moving on to the next step which is to implement this commitment to health and safety leadership throughout the management chain.

This kind of campaign transfers to all types of business where health and safety of workers and users of your premises should be protected at all times. It is your responsibility to ensure that you maintain health and safety in your building to ensure a productive and compliant workplace.

This includes simple safety features like getting your fire extinguishers checked and maintained to ensure they are in full working order and also includes the checking and maintenance of security lighting so that exits can be clearly found in emergency situations.

Do You Maintain Safe Standards?

The Fire Safety Order means that the old system of gaining a fire certificate is no longer legal throughout the UK.

The person responsible for ensuring their building meets current fire safety laws is the person in control of the building, this is usually the employer. This person must ensure that various safety checks and maintenance takes place to ensure a safe working environment.

Some examples of steps responsible people could take include the following:

  • It is important that the responsible person ensures that all portable appliances are tested for dangers and faults to prevent liability and to comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
  • All emergency lighting should be checked and maintained as this can save the lives of the people in your building. In the event of an emergency situation being able to easily find the exit is essential.
  • Fire extinguishers are often forgotten about and some people are unaware that they should be serviced and maintained to ensure correct working order. In the event of a fire, a working and serviced extinguisher can mean the difference between someone’s life and death.
  • Thermal Imaging Surveys can give valuable information on problems that cannot be seen by eye alone. With the ability to detect an overheating circuit that could potentially lead to a fire, to highlight heat loss for energy saving measures, thermal imaging surveys can potentially help businesses save money by highlighting preventable issues that could become larger problems.

All people responsible for safety should maintain and attempt to prevent costly problems to ensure a safe environment for all. The government has published some sector specific guidance to help with the understanding of fire safety responsibility.

Visit the Fire Safety Guides website for further information on maintaining a safe environment for your workers and visitors.
