Emergency Lighting is one of those things you don’t think about.

Why would you, when there are customers to deal with and staff to organise?

What would you do if the worst should happen?

Let’s say, for instance, there’s a fire in your office and the whole building is consumed with smoke, your emergency lighting should show you the way to the exits safely, but you forgot to get them serviced and they are not working.

You and your workers can’t find the exits and are stuck in the smoky building.

This may seem an extreme example, but it could be a very real possibility if you forget to get your emergency lighting checked.

The chances of this situation actually happening to you are rare, but what if it does?

Visit the Emergency Lighting Testing page for more information on what’s involved and what you get for your money.

Don’t get caught out, book your check today for great peace of mind.

Thermal imaging is rapidly becoming an essential tool for preventative maintenance in many different sectors.

We provide thermal imaging diagnostics for a range of different diagnostic purposes.

Thermal cameras are so vital because they can detect radiation in the infrared range of electromagnetic spectrum and produce an image of this radiation.

Thermal imaging can compare temperatures over large spaces and is capable of identifying any components that may be failing before they actually do fail through the identification of high temperatures.

Thermal imaging is also useful for hazardous and difficult to access areas like chemical plants. But, by far one of the most important features of thermal imaging is its non-invasive, non-destructive ability to discover unseen problems that need attention.

Thermal imaging is efficient and fast, and can save you money on expensive repair bills should a component break down.

If you are interested in getting thermal imaging experts into your workplace, contact 0845 365 10 81 and an advisor will give you further information.

The Japanese Consumer Electronics Company, Sony has announced that it is recalling its BRAVIA LCD TV’s after it was discovered that some of the parts were melting.

There has been eleven incidents reported in Japan, but Sony admitted that they put these faulty parts in the range across the world, including Europe, the US and Japan.

Each of the incidents reported smoke coming from the TVs and parts of the TV actually melting.

Sony has reported that they think the faulty part is a backlight system that is overheating and causing melting and fire.

When the Inquirer interviewed Assistant Commissioner for Community Safety from London’s Fire Brigade, Dave Brown, he said;

“The issue with Sony TV’s is a stark reminder of how dangerous electrical appliances can be if they malfunction.”

Most consumers and business owners aren’t aware or don’t think about the danger electrical appliances pose to people every day.

As a company that deals in electrical safety, it is our job to highlight incidents such as this and make you aware of the necessity of getting appliances tested.

Stay safe, get your PAT Test done!

With the warm weather back for the weekend, we thought it only fitting to offer a few suggestions on keeping your summer parties safe.

The Electrical Safety Council has carried out some research which suggests that most summer party hosts don’t follow simple safety steps which in turn puts their party guests at risk of serious electrical accidents.

Often, garden parties can include things like a bouncy castle, paddling pool, live music, stereos or speakers outside and indoor lighting taken outside.

Some don’t consider electrical safety, even though the party is outside and this poses more safety risks, and most don’t use an RCD for any of this electrical equipment.

If people used an RCD it would ensure that their party was at much less risk of fire or electrical shock to their guests. This is even more vital a measure, if the party is to be held outside.

An RCD can protect you much better than a fuse or circuit breaker. Make sure your parties are safe and successful in this lovely sunshine.

It has been estimated that 1.8 million mains plug in mobile phone chargers are bought over the internet in the UK.

The Electrical Safety Council finds this worrying as there are many cheap, unsafe mobile phone chargers being made and put on the market.

The ESC and the local Trading Standards Authorities are working together to carry out safety screening of plug in mobile phone chargers and games console chargers in use.

An independent lab has already carried out tests on a number of test subjects of both branded and unbranded chargers that had been purchased from shops, market stalls and on the internet.

The 28 samples already tested showed that half did not meet relevant safety standards.

This highlights the importance of buying equipment of any nature from trusted sources only and also proves that the importance of safety checks on equipment should be paramount for any businesses peace of mind and to ensure that all users are safe at all times.

The death of a young mother in Cornwall has raised awareness of the need for increased electrical safety.

The 33 year old mother died from electrocution in 2008 after stepping into the bath of her rented property in Cornwall. The young woman’s body was discovered by her five year old daughter.

The Electrical Safety Council stated that without a change in the law tenants must continue to ask landlords about electrical safety tests.

The coroner, at the inquest into the woman’s death, described the lack of a law on electrical checks in rented homes as ‘inexplicable’.

The last electrical safety check carried out on the young woman’s rented home was done in 1981. The family of the 33 year old are now campaigning to get the law changed in order to prevent this from happening to another family.

The Electrical Safety Council are trying to get the Government to look at safety in private rental properties where the risk of electric shock is higher.

This tragedy shows how important safety checks are even where there is yet no law to specify the need for electrical checks in rental properties, it is still a vital safety precaution which could prevent another death like this one.

If you are the landlord of a number of properties, it is important you consider the dangers of electricity and the safety of your tenants.

Getting a Periodic Inspection and Test carried out on your properties could save you from this kind of tragedy.

The warning comes after two men from Mansfield were sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court for fire safety offences.

The local Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue service is actively reminding all business owners of their legal responsibility to ensure that adequate fire safety measures are in place in order to protect all users of their premises.

The court ruling in Nottingham highlights the importance of fire safety procedures and how serious it is to ignore fire safety legislation.

To ensure that your business is always compliant make certain that you have regular PAT Testing, Periodic Inspection and Testing, Fire Extinguisher Servicing and Emergency Lighting Testing carried out.

An enquiry into an electrical fire at Rosepark Care Home in Lanarkshire that killed 14 people in January 2004 was published this year.

The inquiry is the longest in Scottish legal history and in terms of lives lost was the most noteworthy since the 1987 Kings Cross fire in London.

The inquiry concluded that there were a number of factors that contributed to the deaths but it was the sufficient shortages in the construction, alteration and maintenance of the electrical installation that caused the fire.

The fire, it was concluded, was caused by an enclosed electrical distribution board located in a corridor cupboard.

The inquiry concluded that the fire and deaths could have been prevented through;

The fitting of a grommet or protection against damage where the cable passed through the distribution board enclosure.

The cable being installed so that the cable sheath was protecting the insulated conductor as they passed through the knockout.

The distribution board being inspected and tested regularly.

Having an effective system of maintenance in place.

It is vitally important that those responsible for the maintenance of an installation carry out their duty to ensure the safety of those using the building and to avoid the tragic deaths of people like those in the Rosepark Care Home.
